The AsI version is the original redaction of the bass part in this bar. In the main text we include the bottom notes of the octaves added – almost certainly by Chopin – in the stage of proofreading FE1. The addition was also introduced into EE3, most probably pursuant to FE2.

b. 33-34

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

The bottom notes of the L.H. octaves were not written out in the sources; they were marked with the use of the con 8va indication. In AsI the octave doubling of the bass line is not indicated at all, which may be only a shorthand notation, because also in the solo part at the beginning of bar 35 there is only A, and it seems unlikely that Chopin started the octave progression with a single note.

The octaves in AsI in b. 112 and at the beginning of b. 116 are probably the initial version, possibly a temporary variant, eventually abandoned by Chopin (the latter could be indicated by the notation with the carelessly written down 8s, probably added later, since the other octaves are written down without abbreviations).

In A the L.H. octaves are written in an abridged manner with the use of the con 8va indication. The editions explained the abbreviation. The absence of the indication in AsI may be an earlier version or a simplified notation of the obvious.

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

No octaves in AsI

As in b. 128-131, the fact that the bass line was not doubled an octave lower in AsI may be just a simplified version of notation. In A the doubled line was marked with con 8va, which was elaborated in the editions.
